Twin of Human Civilization
Moving on to what became known as the "beer-versus-bread" debate, the origins of both are among food preservation's oldest tricks in the book.

Beer
Beer is one of the oldest alcoholic drinks in human history, with evidence of brewing dating back to around 3500 BCE in ancient Mesopotamia. Beyond providing basic calories, it played a major role in social and religious life, being enjoyed at festivals, celebrations, and funerals to lift people's spirits.

Bread
Bread is one of humanity's oldest foods, dating back over 14,000 years to early hunter-gatherers who baked wild grain dough over open fires. Preceding organized agriculture, it quickly grew from a vital energy source into a central staple of human culture and community.
