Museum of Food and Culture Launches Virtual Exhibit on Eating Invasive Weeds and Food Sovereignty

[Denver, CO, April 3] - The Museum of Food and Culture is thrilled to announce the launch of its first virtual exhibit, Eating Invasive Weeds: Unpacking the Colonial History of Foraging and Food Sovereignty. This interactive and engaging exhibit explores the connection between edible invasive plants (‘weeds’) and food sovereignty throughout history. 


For centuries, edible invasive plants have sustained communities, particularly Indigenous nations and Black communities, despite policies criminalizing foraging and limiting food access. This exhibit unpacks the hidden colonialism behind gardening, agriculture, and anti-foraging policies as a means of reinforcing social hierarchies. Join us on April 22, 2025, for an engaging virtual launch party exploring how colonial history has shaped the way we define ‘weeds’ and restricted food access.


During this unique event, attendees will have the opportunity to discover the fascinating history behind five common ‘weeds’ and the significant impact of lawn culture and anti-foraging laws on food access.
